When the weather’s been cold and the Hudson River freezes over, that’s the time when ice boats may be sailing on the river. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.

Ice boats do have sails, but it’s more like sledding than sailing. One person steers the boat and there’s room for one passenger lying face down, about a foot from the ice. Here’s what it sounds like..

I’m told that ice sailing is the fastest wind propelled sport on earth. How fast?
According to Google, the official iceboat speed record was st on Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin in 1938 at 143 miles an hour.

The boat I sailed on had a pedigree. It once belonged to FDR and I could imagine him taking it out on a cold winter’s afternoon for a spin. I have no idea how fast we were sailing, but it was all I could to hold on when the boat tacked.
