I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.Every year on Patriot’s Day, the third Monday in April, there’s a reenactment of the first skirmish between the Red Coats and the Revolutionaries on Lexington Green in Massachusetts. This year, the reenactment has been cancelled due to the pandemic, but here’s the a taste of what the event was like when I recorded it years ago,starting with Paul Revere riding to warn that the British are on their way.Re-enactor: The Regulars are coming down the road preparing for battle! The regulars are coming down the road. You three, sound the alarm gunRe-enactor: Fire and load! (gunshots)For those who participate in the event as re-enactors, this is an important day.Re-enactor: 10B @ 395 You’d be surprised. You stand there with a musket in your hand and you know you’re one of a bunch of farmers. You know this musket may or may not fire. But standing out there, you see these guys that you know just licked the hell out of the French two hundred years ago. You see them deploying. You see those bayonets there. And somehow or another automatically, you begin to walking back. Even though you know it’s play acting. It’s a very serious thing.Ambience: Three cheers for King George!
