Istanbul – Two Acoustical MarvelsThis week we’ve been listening to some of the iconic sounds of Istanbul, Turkey. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.Ambience: Haghia SophiaHaghia Sophia was built in the year 537 and that time was the largest Christian Church in the Byzantine Empire and an architectural marvel. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, it became a mosque and in 1935, a museum. Recently it’s reverted back to being a mosque again. When I visited in 1999, Haghia Sophia was under construction. You can get a taste of its unique acoustics from this recording.Ambience: Basilica CisternAnother acoustical hot spot in Istanbul is the Basilica Cistern, located underground, not far from Haghia Sophia. It’s a huge, cavernous space, with boardwalks criss-crossing an ancient underground watercourse. The Basilica Cistern an evocative place and has been used as a location for a number of feature films. With the sounds of Istanbul. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.
