Canyambo

CanyamboMusic: Canyambo EnsembleWhen I visited Cuba in 2001, one of the most memorable groups I recorded was called Canyambo. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet. For me, the groups’ most striking feature was the voice of its octogenarian lead singer, Luis Bosa.If you listen carefully, you’ll hear a bass note pounding a rhythm. Well that’s not a bass guitar or drum, it’s an eight foot tall wide-mouth shaft of bamboo that’s thumped to the ground to produce the sound. With thanks to the group Canyambo, recorded in Santiago Cuba in 2001. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.
