Williams: My names is Louie Williams. I fought guys like Joe Herman, Pete Daily. I’m 86 years old and I had my share of fighting. I took ’em and I gave ’em and we all broke even.San Francisco, 1981. I was spending the afternoon with the Over the Hill Gang, a group of retired boxers that met every month to reminisce about the Golden Age of Boxing. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.Downey: That’s why we called it the Golden Age of boxing. We had a lot of great fighters. There were a lot of fights. The worst of those fighters in those days were a lot better than most of the best fighters we have today.Man’s Voice: I think Lou saw me work out in the gym and he figured he could beat me. So he said, “I’ll take that guy on.”Sabin: I got a big surprise. I never saw so many left hands. And then he’d cross a right, you know, and I’d stagger a little bit..Downey: Actually, we were through fighting a lifetime ago. Most of the people that we knew haven’t lived as long as we have. The great part of it is, this is the Over the Hill Gang and to see these guys moving around the way they are, you wouldn’t think that they were over the hill. There all pretty lively guys.Sabin: Yeah, that’s right. That’s why I show up all the time. I wouldn’t miss this. You see the faces. You don’t see them every day you know.Downey: I often wonder why I ever got in the ring myself. But I love the game. And you’d never meet any more gentle people than these boxers that you see here. This is dedicated to Jack Downie, Lou Sabin, Pete Pedro and the other members of San Francisco’s Over the Hill Gang.
