Before Bluegrass, there was Old Time Music, and it’s celebrated at a jamboree every week in a country store in Virginia. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.

Woody Crenshaw: It is in these mountains, the Southern Appalachians going down all the way down to the Delta region where that the European fiddle and the African banjo first came into contact with each other.

Woody Crenshaw and his wife Jackie run the Floyd Country Store, in Floyd, VA. Every Friday night, they roll away the shelves to make room for a dance floor and a stage. Lovers of Old Time Music flock here from all over the world

Woody Crenshaw: Of course the banjo is a very percussive and the fiddle a very melodic instrument. Those two instruments formed basis for what is Old Time Music. This is dance music and the traditional Appalachian string band is banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin and stand up bass. It’s very collaborative. A good old time will really be in tune with the dancers are doing and what they want to do.
This includes stepping music for flat-footing and clogging.

Then the banjo met the violin in southern Appalachia, it gave rise to what's now called "Old Time Music" - which in turn, morphed into Bluegrass.
