Ambience: Old Time Music Jam – banjo, fiddle, upright bass, guitar

Woody Crenshaw: The Friday night jamboree is a time that musicians from all over the region come and bring their fiddles, banjos and guitars, with a certainty that they’re going to find other people to jam with.

Woody Crenshaw and his wife Jackie run the Floyd Country store. Although it’s been around for over a century, in the 1980’s it became a destination for those who love Old Time Music.

Woody Crenshaw: There are the events going on onstage, that’s gospel music and dance music. And there are also little pick up jams going on in the barber shop next door. Upstairs very often there’ll 20-30 musicians sort of huddled up, playing. They continue this tradition of old time Appalachian mountain music. Very often the musicians are the same and then there’s people who come from elsewhere who join it. There’s a kind of a seamless musical conversation that goes on. People know the chords; they know the songs, and they’ve been played for 100 years and they’re still being played.

The jamboree happens every Friday night at the country Store in Floyd, VA. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.
