Tracker – Neverending Question

Tracker Neverending Question

Music; Ambience: Tracking w/ Tom Brown

TB: You see here a heel pad? Right in there, and there’s a toe, a toe, a toe, like that? That’s a coyote print. That’s called a compression.

JM: To a tracker, a walk in the woods becomes a series of never-ending questions. I’m Jim Metzner and this is the Pulse of the Planet.

TB: Let me tell you what drives a tracker. It’s called the sacred question…

JM: Tom Brown, Jr. is a master tracker and the author of many books on wilderness survival.

TB: Let me tell you what drives a tracker. It’s called the sacred question. Grandfather would go point to that little limb there and he’d say, “Was that cut off or was that broken off? Was it cut off and broken off when it was still alive or was it dead? If it was cut off, was it cut by a knife, an axe, a saw? How sharp was it? Was the person right or left handed? How tall were they? How strong were they? Were they used to cutting?” And what that sacred question does, is you ask it of everything, and that’s what tracking and awareness is. “How did this stick get here? Was it broken off was it cut off?” Well, it was cut off. The knife was not that sharp. It was cut off by a right-handed person because they terminated in this direction. The lower part of the knife was not as sharp as the upper part of the knife. That trail is a deer trail This one here is a rabbit trail. This is where a rabbit continually lays.” But you see how this is worn into the ground, this little trail that goes along here? (JM: Yeah.) Rabbits will use them. Lay along the side. In fact, look real close, here’s a rabbit chew here. Here’s a rabbit chew here. See the diagonal bite? Looks like it was nipped off Rabbits will bite like that. Deer don’t. The deer will have a square-ish bite. Life becomes a series of sacred questions.
