A blue planet, our home – the only place that we know of in the entire universe where there is life. And our ancestors tell us that all of life is sacred. I’m Jim Metzner, and this is the Pulse of the Planet. Here are some words from Native Americans in honor of the sacred.
Did you know that trees talk? Well, they do. They talk to each other, and they’ll talk to you if you listen. Trouble is, most people don’t listen. But I’ve learned a lot from the trees: sometimes about the weather, sometimes about animals, sometimes about the Great Spirit.
All things are connected like the blood which unites one family. Man didn’t weave the web of life, he’s merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.
What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the winter time. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the Sunset.
These words were adapted from texts attributed to Dakota, Stoney, Blackfoot and Suquamish Indians Pulse of the Planet is presented with support provided by the National Science Foundation. I’m Jim Metzner.
