Erie County Fair: Sounds Of

ambience: calliope, circus theme

It’s county fair season and this week we’re visiting one of the country’s largest fairs. I’m Jim Metzner, and this is the Pulse of the Planet. Western New York’s Erie County fair traces its origins back to 1814. It’s an eleven day celebration of rural Americana, a country blend of among other things 4H club competitions, racing pigs, prize winning poultry, cheerleaders, carnival side shows, livestock auctions, chain saw artists and an old fashioned calliope. Here are some of its sounds:

ambience: chickens squawking, roosters crowing

“It’s got good type, good eye color, good leg color – she’s a good bird.”

ambience: cheerleaders

“One, two, three, four . . . Red Devils . . . Number one!”

ambience: side show caller

“We don’t know if you believe in alien beings from other planets or not. But you . . . right now, come inside and have a close encounter.”

“I’ve been racing pigs about twelve years. I’d say they are probably almost as smart as a chimpanzee. The only difference is they don’t have hands . . if they did they did they could do anything a chimpanzee does.”

ambience: pig race call, chain saw revving

“I look at the chain saw carving mainly as a sketching tool more than anything.”

ambience: auctioneer, “Over the Waves” calliope

The sounds of New York’s Erie County Fair. .Pulse of the Planet is presented with support provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. I’m Jim Metzner.
