Fleet Week: Memorial Day Weekend

music
ambience: ships horn, helicopter, shell fire/gunshots, officer giving orders

This week, New York City rolls out the red carpet for over 10,000 visiting servicemen and women, as part of the city’s annual Fleet Week celebration. I’m Jim Metzner, and this is the Pulse of the Planet. Mark Alvin is with the Intrepid Sea/Air and Space Museum, which is based aboard the aircraft carrier Intrepid, docked on the Hudson River on New York’s West Side.

“Well, Fleet Week is America’s premier salute to the men and women of the armed forces. It’s an opportunity for the general public to really acknowledge and appreciate, and show that appreciation to the men and women of the armed forces. We have all five branches of the military that are represented here in New York City during this seven day celebration. And what happens is we have about sixteen vessels that come into dock in and around the Intrepid Sea/Air Space Museum bringing the full total up to nineteen vessels that are here. And all of the visiting ships are open to the public with free public tours provided by the crew members themselves. There are military demonstrations which run the range from mock raids staged by the United States Marine Corps, to search and rescue demonstrations provided by the United States Coast Guard. There are parachuting demonstrations. On Memorial Day, on the flight deck of Intrepid we bring together not only active duty military to participate in the event, but also veterans and young children to recognize those men and women who laid their lives on the line – made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our nation’s freedom.”
