WEST INDIAN CARNIVAL- History

The tradition of Carnival is one of the world’s most venerable holidays – one incarnation is this weekend’s West Indian Day Carnival and Parade in New York. I’m Jim Metzner, and this is the Pulse of the Planet, presented by the American Museum of Natural History.

“The Carnival really came to New York from the West Indies. There’s a saying that you can take the people out of the country, but you cannot take the country out of the people.”

Dr. Lamuel Stanislaus is Ambassador at Large from Granada. He tells us that for many years, the Carnival faced opposition from New York officials who found the festival too loud and too big.
